Last week, Miss Elsa’s class talked about how the Bible is filled with stories about God doing amazing things a long time ago. The students listened to excerpts from both parts of the Bible and discussed the difference between the Old and New Testaments. Decorating small wooden treasure boxes with uplifting Bible passages and dried flowers was a fun activity to help reflect on God’s enduring love for us as expressed in the Bible. The older Faith Formation group also talked about the parts of the Bible, how the different books are organized, and the various themes throughout God’s story. We then reflected on how scripture informs our way of knowing God. Along with Tradition, and Reason, Scripture is a key element. Constructing small wooden three-legged stools was a lighthearted yet impactful way to make this metaphor memorable. We concluded our class time with a brief lesson on the meaning of Shrove Tuesday and the many traditions associated with this special day before Lent (including Pancakes for dinner!). As the season of Lent arrives, we look forward to continued learning and growth throughout our faith journey.

We had a great time at the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner! More about the meaning behind pancakes for dinner on this day before Ash Wednesday.
Our Faith Formation students brainstormed different ways we can help in our community. For the month of February, we decided to collect dry cereal to donate to the East End Cooperative Ministry Food Pantry. Thank you to everyone who helped. Your donations were much appreciated! Last week, students reflected on what it means to be “salt and light.” We talked about how we each bring our own special “seasoning” to the world and discussed different ways we can share our light with others to make a positive difference in our community. Miss Elsa’s class explored various types of salt and considered how this seemingly mundane substance is critically important to our daily lives. The students then created watercolor pictures using salt to create a colorful special effect. The older students enjoyed working with Miss Adele to assemble dry soup mixes for the upcoming Soup Sale. Each of us did our part, and together we created a sure-to-be delicious product. Thank you, Miss Adele, for guiding us through another fantastic culinary learning experience! Last week, Miss Elsa’s students learned about the origin of Valentine’s Day and then read The Very Best Day: The Way of Love for Children. Spending time discussing ways that we can share God’s love each day was the inspiration for crafting handmade Valentine’s cards that were later distributed to the Community Lunch attendees at the East End Cooperative Ministry. The older students reflected on Saint Paul’s definition of love in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 and then watched, The Way of Love Practices for a Jesus-Centered Life. This short video provided a brief overview of each of the seven practices of the Way of Love: Turn. Learn. Pray. Worship. Bless. Go. Rest. The students then made cards and candy bags for the EECM shelter residents. |
